Duuude, if you are ever in Long Branch, NJ, you’ve gotta check out Shaka.
Located on the beach in Pier Village, Shaka is a Mexican-style restaurant with a Hawaiian flavor and a surfing theme. They serve quesadillas, rice bowls, tacos, salads and burritos. I loved the “make your own” burrito option, loading mine with chicken, pineapple, brown rice, and black beans.
With surf boards for menus, a big fish tank, and colorful, whimsical decor, it’s a treat for the eyes as well as the stomach.
I visited Shaka in the middle of the day in the middle of winter, so it was pretty quiet except for several who came in for takeout lunch orders. But I could close my eyes and imagine the vibe that must be there on a hot summer day at the beach. Shaka also serves serves Hawaiian shaved ice at a tiki bar that looks like a fun place for kids to gather and enjoy a sweet, cold treat.
Shaka operates their restaurant with “Earth Friendly” products and practices. They even transformed a washer and dryer into trash and recycling bins – super cute.
